I gave this presentation at the National Wine Marketing Conference in Geneva, Ohio: License to Steal.

What amazed me about this session was the number of wine marketers that are trying to figure out their story - definitely the key thought of the day.

Presentation below includes why, before considering any content marketing tactics, wine marketers must uncover how their passion and expertise can be focused on the pain points of their customers to create the special sauce – the content marketing that truly attracts and retains customers.

Special thanks to the Ohio Grape Industries for sponsoring my session at the conference.

Wanted to share this 10 minute video from the good folks at Stella Pop. In the interview (taken just outside the Occidental restaurant in Washington DC) we cover such concepts as:

What if customers actually requested your marketing?

Social media doesn’t work without a content strategy.

Who’s responsible for the corporate story?

To think like a publisher, you have to take your sales hat off…

Lower the barriers for people to spread it

It’s odd talking to utility marketers about marketing – the majority of them have a monopoly in their markets. In many cases as I’m learning, they are forced to market by the federal government. So, for those and a few other reasons, utility marketers are a little behind the content marketing game.

That said, the expertise in these companies is high, and the potential to create meaningful conversations with customers is certainly possible. Some utilities, such as MLGW, are already doing a great job communicating consistently with customers – and are starting to leverage social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook.

Big thanks to the folks at Esource for having me come in and share some of my thoughts with their members. This was my third Esource event – a truly great team and fun event.

Below is the presentation I gave to about 150 utility marketers. Enjoy!
